New funding for projects which support Anzac legacy

Minister for Veterans Affairs David Elliott today announced more than $125,000 will be invested in the conservation of 24 war memorials across NSW as part of the Community War Memorial Fund.

As part of the latest round, $10,000 will be contributed to the treatment of rust in a rare WWI Howitzer Gun at Moss Vale, as well as repainting and recreating the wheels of the gun.

More than $4,300 will be used to help treat disease in 96-year-old memorial peppercorn trees on Diggers Avenue in Condobolin to ensure they continue to survive for decades to come.

It comes as the NSW Government opens a new round of Anzac Community Grants of up to $2000 for projects which educate communities about the role Australia played in wars and conflicts and support the activities of the NSW veterans community.

All entries for the Anzac Community Grants must be received by 30 April 2016.

Mr Elliott welcomed the new round of Anzac Community Grants and congratulated the 24 successful applicants of the Community War Memorials Fund.

“The NSW Government is passionate about providing funding that will see communities conserving and improving historic war memorials as well as other programs that will ensure the Anzac legacy lives on,” Mr Elliott said.

“All 24 war memorials that were successful this round were built before the First World War or shortly after giving them substantial heritage significance.”

Applications are now open for the next round of the Community War Memorials Fund. Applicants have until Anzac Day to apply for a grant of up to $10,000 for the conservation, repair or protection of a community war memorial.
